#71052: CMF Series 29 Review
Series 29 returns CMF to its classic anything-goes format with a strong top half, a few weak spots, and one all-time great in the BIONICLE Cosplayer.
History
Collectible Minifigures have been doing their thing since 2010, and the format has barely changed in the best possible way. You get a blind bag, or now a blind box, with one figure, a handful of accessories, and a tiny instruction sheet. What changes series to series is the theme. Some series have a tight concept tying all twelve figures together. Others are a grab bag of characters from all over the place. Series 29 falls into that second category, which after the animal costume theme of Series 28 is a nice back to the classic format.
Series 28, which was CMF Series 28 Animals #71051
CMF Series 28 Animals
#71051, was fun but had that narrowing effect where if animals are not your thing, you are buying a series that does not quite speak to you. Series 29 goes back to the old playbook: musicians, athletes, fantasy creatures and LEGO nostalgia nods. The result is something that has a bit for almost everyone.
The Set and Its Place in the LEGO Lineup
At $4.99 per figure these are never a bad impulse buy, and the question as always with CMF is not whether to buy the series but which figures from it are worth hunting down. Series 29 is interesting because the distribution of quality is pretty uneven. There are four great figures, four that are solidly middle of the pack, and four that are on the weaker end. The good news is that with no overall theme forcing you to collect all twelve, you can pick and choose without feeling like the set is incomplete. These ranking are also my personal opinions and your mileage may vary. The BIONICLE Cosplayer is the GOAT for me, but I understand if that one does not speak to you at all. The Unicorn Elf is a favorite of my son, but I know some people will find it too bland. The Marine Biologist is a hit with me, but I know it is not going to be the most popular figure in the series.
This is also a series that will clearly appeal to very different audiences at the same time. The BIONICLE Cosplayer is going to sell out in days purely on nostalgia. The Mysterious Ronin will be fought over by Ninjago fans. These are not competing for the same shelf space, which makes Series 29 a good one to just buy a few of and be happy.
What’s in the Box?
Each figure comes in a small cardboard box with the series branding and a number on the back corresponding to the figure inside. Inside the box you get the unassembled figure, its accessories, and a small folded instruction sheet. The boxes feel a bit more premium than the foil bags they replaced, though the element of surprise is now more about whether you got the one you were hoping for rather than whether you could identify it by touch.
There are no sticker sheets in any of these. Everything is printed, which is exactly as it should be for figures at this price point.
Instructions Booklet
Each figure comes with a single small sheet showing how to assemble the figure and attach accessories of select figures. The backside contains a checklist, so you can keep track of which figures you have collected. The instructions are clear and completely unnecessary for anyone over the age of six, but they do serve as a nice reference for what accessories go with what figure when you are digging through a parts bin three years later.
Parts Breakdown
The parts data below covers each figure individually. Since this is a twelve-figure series rather than a single set build, the parts section is organized figure by figure rather than as one combined overview.
Robot T. rex
The Robot T. rex is an interesting one. Most CMF figures are a humans in a costume or a character from a specific genre. This one seems to actually be a robot dinosaur. There is no face on the head piece, just a weird vortex print that reads more mechanical than anything else. It is a strange design choice but it commits fully to the bit.
The print work on the tail, legs, and torso is detailed and sells the concept well. Silver ribs, armor plating, a blue reactor on the chest. It is more Iron Man T. rex than Jurassic Park and I think that is fine. My son would absolutely love this. Getting it into a city setting is harder though. It is very much a standalone display piece or a figure for someone building a sci-fi scene.
The battery accessory is one of the better surprise accessories in the series. A Brick Round 1 x 1

Marine Biologist
This is one of my personal favorite of the series and I will fully admit that is partly because of my own collection. I have a couple of submarine sets, including the rare Shinkai 6500 Submarine #21100
Shinkai 6500 Submarine
#21100 Japan exclusive, four copies of the Search Sub #8250

Sting Ray Explorer

Beyond the personal connection, this is also a strong figure. The wetsuit torso print is layered and detailed, with a Bright Light Blue
, Light Aqua
and Lavender
pattern plus a zipper detail on the back. The leg print continues the wetsuit look. She comes with Minifig Footwear Flipper

that work as foot attachments for the fins. That accessory count is impressive and this figure has the highest part count in the series.
The clownfish is a new mold and a nice addition. The fern in Opal Trans-Dark Pink (Satin Trans-Dark Pink) is the kind of color you never expect to see on a plant element and it looks great. The Dark Blue flippers are a new color combination for that mold, which has previously only appeared in other colors.

BIONICLE Cosplayer
This is the GOAT of Series 29. No debate.
For people who grew up with BIONICLE, this figure is an immediate wave of nostalgia. The Tahu mask is new and is an unmistakable recreation of the Kanohi Hau, the mask of shielding worn by Tahu in the original Tahu #8534
Tahu
#8534 set from 2001. The torso print references the Red
armor and technic bush details that made the original figure look mechanical. The leg print carries on the armor theme with Orange
legs and Red
boots.
The real genius touch is the accessory. It is a Brick Round 1 x 1
Light Bluish Gray
Brick Round 1 x 1 Open Stud with Bionicle Cannister, Tahu print
Light Bluish Gray
printed with the Bionicle canister art, specifically the Tahu design from the original packaging.

Those plastic canisters were how the Toa line was packaged and later how you stored the figures. I had all of the Toa line but the canisters are lost to time. The Toa line wasn’t my favorite BIONICLE line though, I had was the Bohrok line too and honestly I thought those were the better sets. The canisters had a clip so you could hang them from the lid, the figures could fold into a ball. Peak design for an eleven year old in the early 2000s. But I completely understand why the Tahu design is the one they chose here. Tahu was the face of BIONICLE.
The face print is new, with a Pink bandana and a lopsided smile that works perfectly for the cosplay character concept. The figure is wearing the mask, not being the mask. That is a subtle but important distinction. You also see this on the torso print, where a technic gear is printed on the chest to resemble the mechanical nature of the original figure. The figure is a person dressed up as Tahu, not a minifig version of Tahu.
For people who were not BIONICLE fans, this one might feel like a niche reference they do not fully get. For those of us who were, it is one of the best CMF figures in years.

Monster Hunter
It is May, and that means Dracula Daily is back. Jonathan Harker is on his way to the Draculas castle in Bram Stoker classic story. I follow along every year and the Monster Hunter feels right at home there.
On first look this is a strong figure. The torso is detailed, with a Dark Orange
coat, a Dark Brown
strap with little bottles hanging off it, Gold
decorations, and White
shirt ruffles showing at the collar. The arms are printed too. The print adds Dark Orange
armor to otherwise Reddish Brown
legs. The coat tail is a new mold (well cut) in Dark Orange
, and the Weapon, Sword Bayonet
Pearl Gold
Weapon, Sword Bayonet
Pearl Gold
is also new.
After spending more time with it though I have a couple of issues. The face has the mouth sitting crooked, which might just be me, but it bothered me. The eyepatch reads ambiguously: is it a lost eye, some kind of scope, or do we have a magical “Mad-Eye” situation? I honestly cannot tell and I think it could have been cleaner. The dual molded hair and hat in Dark Red locks you into a specific look that you cannot change. You cannot give her a different haircut without loosing the hat and you cannot swap the hat for something else wihtout loosing the hair. This also makes it impossible to make a male version and build a duo. I understand why dual molds exist and I understand they allow for more detail, but the loss of flexibility is frustrating.
The accessories include the new Weapon, Sword Bayonet
Pearl Gold
Weapon, Sword Bayonet
Pearl Gold
and a Tile 2 x 3
Tan
Tile 2 x 3 with Wanted Poster, 'REWARD', Vampire print
Tan
with a wanted poster showing a vampire and the word REWARD. Both are pretty good accessories though, but somehow the Bayonet doesn’t speak to me. The figure has a lot of character and a strong design, but it does not quite come together for me.
I am sure others will love this one and this is one of the reasons the CMF line is so strong. There is something for everyone, and not every figure is for every person. I just wish I liked this one more than I do.
She would pair well with the Werewolf from Werewolf #8804-12
Werewolf
#8804-12 Series 4, and honestly might fit even better next to the Steampunk Inventor #71048-12
Steampunk Inventor
#71048-12 from Series 27 given the Victorian aesthetic overlap.

Boba Cup Fan
I was so excited for this one going in. A person dressed as a boba tea cup is the kind of concept that works brilliantly in a city setting. You can put it on any sidewalk outside a modular building and it looks like someone advertising for a bubble tea shop. That is instant usefulness. Bonus point because I love boba tea. I was ready to love this one.
The excitement faded a bit once I had it in hand. The boba costume piece is Trans-Dark Pink and while the color is nice, it is transparent enough that the alternate head print shows through from behind. A single-sided head would have been better than a dual-sided one that you can see through the costume. It takes away from the finished look in a way that should have been caught before production.
The Bright Pink
torso underneath is new though, and the Bright Pink
legs are a rare piece. They have only appeared in three sets total, the first being Pop-Up Book #21315

Trash Monster
My initial reaction to this one was skepticism. The Trash Monster did not speak to me at all when I saw the first images. A garbage creature felt like the kind of figure that only works in a very specific context, and I was not sure what that context would be.
Getting it in hand changed my mind. The slime headpiece, a bug for an eyebrow, and a green tongue is detailed and disgusting in the best possible way. The torso is Olive Green with slime, bugs, a fly, and a worm, with Lime arms and Reddish Brown hands. The leg print continues the trash theme.
The headpiece is not a new mold but it has only been used once before in a Vidiyo CMF set Slime Singer #43108-9

The accessories are where this figure really shines and changed my perception. You get a Animal, Fish Skeleton

My initial worry that this figure would not fit anywhere was wrong. A modular back alley, a dumpster scene, a haunted building. This one fits in more places than I first thought.

Chocolatier
In my opinion, the promotional pictures of the Chocolatier is the definition of a bland figure. Simple head, hat/hair and not too detailed torso or legs. That doesn’t automatically make it bad though. It is well made, cleanly printed, and will fit into a bakery or dessert shop scene without any effort. Put it in the back of the Bakery in Assembly Square #10255
Assembly Square
#10255 and it looks like it belongs there.
The chef hat is a dual-molded piece in White with Ochre Yellow hair underneath, and while the mold itself has appeared before with other hair colors, the combination is new. The torso print has a white apron with gold scribbling and reddish brown accents. The legs are reddish brown with an apron print. The lopsided smile with tongue sticking out is charming enough.
The standout piece here is the chocolate Creature, Dragon

The Musical Instrument Tuba

One odd note: the Tuba Player is the only figure in Series 29 without a dual-sided head. Just one face. No explanation for that.

Football Goalkeeper
Football is not really my thing and this figure does not excite me, except for the football, which can always be used for GBC (or can it?). I will say the dual colored arms are vibrant, and the torso and leg prints are both great. The Lime Green and Dark Turquoise colors are a nice change of pace from the more muted tones we often see in CMF. The torso print has a nice fade-over effect with a badge on his chest, and the leg print has a fun mountain logo that adds some visual interest.
The nostalgia for the old football sets is real though. This figure reminds me of the spring-loaded minifig stand Sports Soccer Minifig Stand

The football accessory is interesting for the wrong reasons. It is not a recolor of the classic football mold Sports Soccer / Basket Ball
White
Sports Soccer / Basket Ball [Plain]

, and it is not even categorized as a minifig accessory. It uses the same mold as the newer Editions football sets like Lionel Messi Football Highlights #43011
Lionel Messi Football Highlights
#43011 and Cristiano Ronaldo Football Highlights #43012
Cristiano Ronaldo Football Highlights
#43012, which is categorized as a minifig head because it has a stud hole for a peg. The goalkeeper’s hand snaps into that hole so the figure can actually hold the ball, which is a nice touch. The print is exclusive to this figure. But that also means you cannot use the ball for GBC or with the old football sets, which is a shame. It is a nice accessory though.
The football peg hole fits on top of the torse though, so we can make some kind of macabre football monster if we want. The ball can be the head and the head can be the ball. It is a fun little quirk that I am sure some people will take advantage of.
The curly black hair is a rare piece, having only appeared in four sets total, both of which are 2025 One Piece sets.

Cute Witch

The Cute Witch is a middle-of-the-pack figure for me personally, though I think it will be a popular one overall. The design is charming. The torso is Blue Violet with Pearl Gold buttons, White ruffles, and a Dark Pink bow with a jewel in the center that has a vague Sailor Moon energy to it. The skirt is also Dark Purple with Gold trim and Bright Light Blue stars. The leg print has White cat socks with Black shoes showing underneath, which is a cute detail.
The standout piece here is not the figure but the accessory. The Animal, Cat Sitting

The witch hat and hair piece is also new, a dual molded design in Dark Purple with Bright Light Blue hair showing at the base. The face has a wink and Bright Pink lips and cheeks.
I have no strong personal attachment to the figure but it is well executed and easy to use in many settings.

Mysterious Ronin
I am not a Ninjago person. I was too old when it came out for it to be a favorite line of mine and my son is too young for it currently. But I have been told by that this is Lloyd, and even from the outside I can see why this figure is getting the response it is getting.
Everything about this one is just good. The torso and legs are well-designed and detailed. The dual-molded hood and hair piece is new in Black with Tan hair showing underneath, and it works well. The face print has Dark Orange eyebrows, cheek lines, and Green eyes with a stern expression that is exactly right for a ronin character.
The neckwear shoulder guard is in Reddish Brown
, which is a new color for that mold. It has previously appeared in Pearl Titanium (Pearl Dark Gray)
across 45 sets and Pearl Gold
in 21 sets. The Reddish Brown

#42674, both from 2025. It is small, charming, and the kind of accessory you buy the figure for. Getting animal accessories in CMF is always good value.
The elf figure herself is better than I expected. The torso is Yellowish Green with a dress made of leaves as ruffles, silver decorations, and a pendant. The leg print continues the leaf dress theme. The hair and tiara is also a new color, long and wavy in Pearl Gold with a silver tiara print. The previous prints of this hair mold has been used for Wonder Woman figures.
The dual face has a peaceful eyes-closed expression on one side. I understand the idea, resting elf, serene, magical, but the closed eyes make the figure look awkward when displayed and I am not sure it was the right call.
My son loves this one though, and I can see why. I’ll have to get an extra unicorn foal and a spare horn for him to play with.

The Build Experience
There is not much to say here that you do not already know if you have built a CMF before. Each figure is a 30-second build depending on the accessories. You snap a torso onto legs, press the head on, attach the accessories, and you are done. There are no bags, no numbered stages, no structural tricks to notice. The instruction sheet exists but you could do all twelve figures without looking at it once.
You do not buy CMF for the building experience.
The Finished Product
Lined up together, Series 29 is a visually strong set. The variety in color and character type means there is no visual monotony. The BIONICLE Cosplayer in Red , the Marine Biologist in Dark Blue and Light Aqua , the Boba Fan in Bright Pink , the Mysterious Ronin in Dark Green , the Cute Witch in Blue Violet and Dark Purple , the Unicorn Elf in Yellowish Green and Pearl Gold . The palette across the twelve figures is diverse enough that they look good displayed together.
Individual display-worthiness varies. Some figures like the Robot T. rex, BIONICLE Cosplayer or the Mysterious Ronin are strong enough to stand on their own as display pieces. Others like the Tuba Player or the Chocolatier are better as population figures, filling out a scene rather than anchoring one.
The accessories across the series are mostly great, with the boba fan being the obvious exception. The Animal, Fish Skeleton

The Real Talk
The Good Stuff
The top tier of this series is excellent. The new mold count, new color combinations and new prints across the series is high. New animals, new weapons, new costume pieces, new hair and hat combinations. At $4.99 per figure the value per new element is strong.
The Not So Good Stuff
The lower tier of this series has real problems. The Boba Cup Fan has a design flaw that should not have made it to production: the transparent costume revealing the back head print is a miss. The accessory for that figure is also inexplicably bland. One cherry.
The Tuba Player and Football Goalkeeper are not bad figures, they are just not exciting ones. There is nothing wrong with a well-executed generic character but they feel like they could have been in any series across the last decade without anyone noticing. The Chocolatier sits in the same spot: competent, pleasant, unmemorable (baby dragon notwithstanding).
Some of the dual-molded hair pieces also lock you into a single character interpretation in ways that limit how you can use the figure. The Monster Hunter is the clearest example. A great concept that you cannot quite customize.
Should You Buy It?
If you are a BIONICLE fan, the Cosplayer is a must-buy. The same can be said for the Mysterious Ronin if you are a Ninjago fan. If you have any town or city MOC with water, the Marine Biologist belongs in it. The Boba Cup Fan, Tuba Player, and Chocolatier are easy picks if you are filling out a modular city scene, even if none of them are must-haves on their own.
For the rest of the series, the answer depends on what you build. The Trash Monster is underrated and the accessories alone are worth it for anyone doing a city back-alley scene. The Cute Witch has a great cat mold.
At $4.99 each you are not taking a huge risk on any of them, and since the series has no theme forcing completionism, this is one of the CMF waves where you can pick your four or five favorites and feel good about it.
Final Score
Build Experience: 1/10 - A CMF is a 30-second assembly and there is nothing else to evaluate here.
Design: 7/10 - The top four figures are great but the bottom four have some issues, including at least one actual design flaw.
Parts Quality: 7/10 - Great new parts and strong accessories across most figures, but the boba fan’s plain cherry accessory and the soccer ball not using the classic mold are weird choices.
Playability: 9/10 - CMF figures almost always score high here and Series 29 is no exception, with a wide range of character types that suit different play scenarios.
Overall: 8/10 - A strong mixed series with enough for almost everyone.
